The Cockpit
What Visitors Say
This is THE pub to visit in the City of London! An amazing hidden pub, only found by chance. The décor has not changed since the 1950s, which adds to the character. Beer is of amazing quality. Highly recommended. A****
I was on a guided tour of historic pubs and this was one of the stops. I just had a half pint and the history surrounding this pub is phenomenal and the decor is definitely interesting. A great place to socialize with a drink. I’d definitely come back here again.
Nice place ! Good selection of beers and friendly service. Loads of tourists when I went in but still got a seat. Good location for tube stations and close to the Thames.
Very cosy and welcoming. The young lady who served us (wish I got her name) was fantastic. Enjoyed my time in this pub, would definitely revisit.
My wife and I always make sure to make The Cockpit one of our stops when we visit. It's a beautiful, classic pub tucked away south of St Paul's Cathedral. The pub has been here since 1865 and originally served as a fighting ring for rooster. The decor reflects its past history and the interior is ringed with a gallery from which to watch the matches. The only food you'll find is a bag of crisps, but the beer is always good and the staff is courteous and professional. It gets quite busy and despite its location in central London, retains its character as a friendly local and visitors will have a great experience.

Fun Facts
The current pub is associated with a circa-1860 building, but pub history on the site is often traced back to the 16th century.
The Cockpit was formerly known as The Cock Pit and later The Three Castles.
The name refers to cockfighting, and Londonist notes the gallery detail still shaping the room's story.
Local lore connects the area with Shakespeare's Blackfriars house nearby.
