Queer Britain
What Visitors Say
A lovely free museum to stroll through for a good history lesson on the queerness of Britain! The museum is donation based and very inclusive. At the time of this review they only had 2 rooms, but working on building more. My favourite part were the antique telephone which played recording of people who had worked on the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard. Has a lovely little store with queer books and souvenirs at the end. Although small, it is well curated and it’s important to keep in mind that their limited exhibits is not due to lack of effort, but due to lack of funds. Worth visiting and donating to the cause!
This is a nice museum documenting the history of LGBT life in the country with some moving accounts and stories. Staff were very friendly and the place looked well looked after. It's free entry too, but please do leave some pennies for them if you can. The rent can't be cheap for the location and we must keep places like this alive. I do unfortunately have to agree with other reviews though on the negative side of things. It obviously isn't the fault of anyone in-particular and its better to have this space than nothing at all, but in a city like London, a museum the size of a small house tucked away behind Kings Cross, that takes 20 minutes to swing through just isn't capable of representing the wider community, regardless of what rotated exhibition is currently up. Especially when you consider London Pride attracts people in the millions, it does feel a little underwhelming. I'm sure it was dreamt to have a bigger space once upon a time, but this museum isn't even in the Soho area? Again, this isn't to knock the staff, nor anyone that enjoyed their time here, but a bigger space that dedicates more to trans/nb and ace people is kind of the least I expected before I came here. I'm a cisgender member of the community and even I can see there is not enough here for the aforementioned groups. Regardless it gives us all something to dream about that we can hope happens in the future.
A really beautiful little museum. It doesn't take long to go around, so maybe don't plan to do that as the whole day activity, but definitely worth seeing and supporting! I really look forward to returning when their collection grows
I can't explain with all of the words in the languages I know how important and informative this museum is to the public. I can tell you, I knew practically none of the information I learned in this museum and I am queer. It is such a small museum but it took me three hours. This was a really informative place for me. I took a lot of notes and did further research, and it is so difficult to state how much this museum means. It is so important to archive queer history. I did not know about Club Kali, BLGC, the different ways queer news was shared, etc. I also knew very little about AIDS and Women's Liberation Music. I knew of it, but I knew far less than I thought. This was a very transformative experience for me. Thank you to every staff member that keeps this place running. I lived in London for years and didn't know about it until I began doing research ... and I am so grateful for this space.
Very nice place but minus 1 star as it is only 2 room ; 3 if we include the movie space… I was disappointed about the size of it. And as a historian, specialized in cultural history, let me say that Britain has a MASSIVE queer history and it should be given a bigger space !! I wish there were public policies efforts to help this museum to grow bigger 💗
