What Visitors Say
The theatre was great, unfortunately the issues I had were more about my ability to climb and descend stairs. We were in the Upper Circle, so there were a lot of stairs. The UC was steep giving us a great view but getting to the seats was difficult as there was nothing to hold on to to get down to our seats in Row C. The leg room is limited and if you need to get past people you're taking your life in your hands!
Excellent venue. Hackney Central Station just around the corner on Mildmay Overground Line. Front of House & theatre staff very polite & helpful. Saw The Drifters and the performance, sound & lighting were terrific. Real Party atmosphere. Beautifully renovated decor and great view from our Dress Circle seats. I bought a round from Dress Circle Bar but the local pubs are nothing to recommend if you want pre show drinks. Baxters Court Wetherspoons (upstairs bar) was the best.
I performed there on 1st February 2026, and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. The staff were welcoming, professional, and attentive, everything ran seamlessly. The venue felt beautifully intimate; you would never guess it seats over 1,200 people. Even those at the back had a clear view and heard every single moment. Thank you, Hackney Empire, and thank you to everyone who attended. From the entire Why Didn’t I Get Married? cast, we appreciate you all. ✨️🎭🖤💫
Stunning place with the nicest staff ever. Drinks at the bar are very refreshing and I got a perfect view of the scene from the upper circle. The upper circle may not be the best place to sit for people with back pain or similar problems, the seats are tiny! The seats are larger and fluffier at lower levels though.
Amazing place, built in 1906 it's a very good venue for music like qawwali and gazals. Toilets need renovation. The staff is nice and efficient.

✨ Best For
Pantomime, comedy, concerts, variety performances, family audiences and East London culture in a grand historic theatre.
💺 Best Seats
Stalls centre for atmosphere and sound; Dress Circle front rows for classic Matcham auditorium views; Upper Circle front-centre provides strong value.

Avoid far-side Upper Circle where the rake and angle reduce detail. Back rows under the overhang feel more enclosed for tall visitors.
Things to Know Before You Go
Which seats are worth prioritising at Hackney Empire?
Stalls centre for atmosphere and sound; Dress Circle front rows for classic Matcham auditorium views; Upper Circle front-centre provides strong value. For a safer booking, also note: Avoid far-side Upper Circle where the rake and angle reduce detail. Back rows under the overhang feel more enclosed for tall visitors. Use that as editorial guidance rather than a guarantee; always check the live seating plan and any seat notes before paying.
Is Hackney Empire a good venue for seeing Cinderella?
Yes, if you book with the production's scale in mind. Cinderella is currently listed at Hackney Empire, so choose seats that suit this staging rather than simply buying the cheapest available ticket. For a first visit, a central view is the least risky option.
What kind of night out does Hackney Empire suit best?
Hackney Empire works best for Pantomime, comedy, concerts, variety performances, family audiences and East London culture in a grand historic theatre. The right choice depends less on dress code and more on matching the room to the production: intimate plays reward proximity, while spectacle-led musicals usually benefit from a more centred overview.
What should I know about access before booking Hackney Empire?
Check the venue's official access page or box office before booking wheelchair spaces, transfer seats, step-free routes, companion seats or assisted performances. London venues vary sharply by level, and the most comfortable choice is often a specific access seat rather than a general price band.
How early should I arrive at Hackney Empire?
Aim to be at the doors around half an hour before the performance, and earlier if you need access support, cloakroom time, box-office collection or a quiet drink. For older West End buildings, late arrival can mean stairs, narrow foyers and a less relaxed start.
