Things to Know Before You Go
Do I need to have seen the Back to the Future films?
No. The story is easy to follow even if you have never seen the original films. Fans will enjoy spotting familiar lines and visual references, but newcomers will still get a complete, self-contained story with clear stakes, lively characters and a satisfying ending.
Is Back to the Future: The Musical suitable for children?
Yes, it is generally suitable for families and is recommended for children around six and over. There are some loud moments, flashes of light and a bit of mild language, but the tone is upbeat and playful. If your child is comfortable with big sound and spectacle, they are likely to enjoy it.
How long does the performance last?
The show runs for roughly two hours and forty minutes including an interval. That allows time for a full story, plenty of musical numbers and all the time-travel set pieces, without feeling excessively long for most audiences.
Are there strong special effects or loud moments?
Yes. The production features dynamic sound design, lighting effects, smoke and some surprisingly bold visual tricks to sell the time travel. These moments are exciting rather than frightening, but if you or someone in your party is sensitive to loud noises or flashing lights, you may wish to prepare in advance.
About this show
The 1985 time-travel film blasts onto the West End stage in a musical that sends Marty McFly hurtling from present-day Hill Valley back to 1955. With help from the irrepressible Doc Brown and a very famous DeLorean, he has to make sure his parents fall in love, fix the timeline and still get home in time for the school dance. Familiar moments from the film are reimagined with full company numbers, sharp choreography and ingenious stagecraft.
This production combines classic songs like ‘The Power of Love’ with new material written for the stage, all driven by a live band and high-energy performances. A high-voltage mix of comedy, music and spectacle makes it ideal for families, groups of friends and anyone who grew up with the original trilogy. From the first guitar riff to the final time jump, it’s a big-hearted, nostalgic night out that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
