Really unpleasant! I was 15 minutes late to the show (unfortunately for reasons entirely out of my control) and no accommodations were made to get me in at any point in the 90 minutes. The person at the door wasn't very nice about it but I tried to get over it - I understand sometimes it's not possible. (Oddly she maybe tried to make me feel worse by saying they held the show up for 10 minutes, but later I was told by people who attended that this was not true). Then while I was sitting in the front, another staff member got in an argument with a man who left to use the bathroom and couldn't be let back in. I heard him try to explain that this was unfair and that he has a disability. She kept raising her voice at him and said he should have disclosed this before the show. Why would someone have to do that at the theatre? It was very unpleasant and unkind to witness. Then they did find a way to get him in! Which was very disheartening for me as I waited here for 75 minutes and no one could find a way to get me in. Afterwards, I could hear her and other staff members complaining loudly about him and his mentioning of a disability card, mocking him and laughing and it went on for so long. I wanted to go and say something but did not have the energy to also be yelled at and probably mocked behind my back after. shockingly unpleasant and unprofessional. my first and last visit.
First time visiting this venue and I had a wonderful time! Never had even heard of the theatre before but now I will be keeping a close eye on future shows. Went to see Dear Jack, Dear Louise and it was one of the best shows I have seen recently. I really loved the simplicity of the set and the two actors were fantastic. The story was captivating and the theatre itself offered really unique and fun seating. Drinks were an ok price and good service both from ticket people and bar staff. Even bought the play script. Really had a pleasant evening.
Iphigenia at the Arcola Theatre Studio 2 Dalston London was brilliant this evening. It combined ancient and modern and delivered it with wit and high drama. This is theatre at its best. The acting was superb as was the haunting live music. It is difficult to believe that only 3 actors and 1 musician did it all. A tiny but powerful production.
The theatre itself is really lovely, but unfortunately the play and cast weren’t the best. My partner (who is Ukrainian) and I went to see Ukraine Unbroken, and we both found the acting extremely over-the-top throughout the performance. The historical events being portrayed are very important and meaningful to Ukrainians, but the way they were presented didn’t convey that significance at all. Instead, it often came across as exaggerated and unintentionally comedic, which felt quite disappointing given the subject matter… We also felt that very little effort went into the staging. There was minimal lighting on stage and almost no real set design or costume work, which made the whole production feel underdeveloped. Another issue was that some objects placed on stage seemed to serve no purpose at all, which made the staging feel poorly thought through. For example, a plate was sitting on a table for quite a while without any relevance to the scene. At one point the child actor simply came on, picked up the plate, and left again. It didn’t add anything to the story or the scene and just felt random... Not to mention that although we bought the cheaper tickets, and didn’t expect amazing seats, we did at least expect to have a normal view of the stage. Unfortunately, our seats had restricted view. As big theatre fans, we were really looking forward to it, but sadly we ended up leaving during the interval feeling quite unhappy with the experience.
I saw a really good and engaging theater performance here. The show was excellent, and the theater's location and access to public transportation are great. There's also a bar in the theater where you can order drinks.
